Holy comeback Batman, does it ever feel great to be back! A thousand times welcome to the new revamped and re-amped Breaking the 4th Wall! I am your returning favorite hostess Jess, I hope you all haven’t missed me too much. Now, before we actually get back into the swing of things, let me tell you about the changes that are gonna go down. As it would seem, my former partner in pickiness Mr. Josh McCombs has some inherent…commitment issues… so we have been forced to revive sans his annoying voice. Good riddance. (He knows I’m just kidding, we love the guy, but seriously. Enough’s enough, am I right?) The lovely moi shall remain an ever constant critic where my co-critics will rotate between the surly and opinionated Justin Malette-Larcher and the dapper, charismatic site owner himself, Paul Ungar (those will be the boring PG ones ’cause, you know, he’s the big boss and everything… *eye roll*).
We’re gonna be kicking things off with our resident Chewbacca look-alike Justin. Say a few words to the lovely fans, Chewie!
No, Jess didn’t put the wrong name in. I (your ever so handsome co-writer) have returned from the grave and like DC’s new 52, I’m here to bring some new life into B4W. Because I mean let’s face it; how many more Star Wars or Trek references can one person take? I’ll be swinging by from time to time to make sure to deflate Jess’ ever growing ego. I kid of course, she’s a fantastic wri-….sorry about that I just threw up in my mouth a little.
Alright, now that that business is over and done with, let’s get on to the featured comic:
By Kelly Turnbull
(aka Coelasquid)
Now, this little testosterone gem is about a support house where all the manliest characters in video game and moviedom go to readjust back into normal society. It mainly follows the head-honcho Commander Badass and his weiner-kid license-revoked Pokétrainer understudy who so happens to own a giant Gyarados he calls “Mr. Fish”.
Jess: The thing I absolutely adore about this totally hilarious comic (ie: the gay chicken arc… BAHAHA!) is that it’s so fundamentally just all man-testoserone-ness and it’s written by a girl. Brilliant. That isn’t why I love it so much though. I love it because it’s so bloody funny! Reading about all your favorite video game characters interacting with each other like this is ridiculously entertaining. I wish it was more than just a once-a-week update. I love this comic.
Justin: Wow, all that’s missing there is the happy ending, Jess. I will agree with Jessica about 90% of the way. The female perspective in an overly male driven genre (Games and Movies) is hilarious. The style of drawing fits it so well…majority of the time. When the style switches up or isn’t complete, it seems to take away from the comedic punch line.
Justin – 4/5 Steroided (new word) pencils. Damn near perfect just needing to have 100% completed strips
Jess – 5/5 Rippling pectoral 6-pack abbed pencils. One of the best comics I’ve read in a good long time
In conclusion lady (yes, singular) and nerds, Manly Guys Doing Manly Things delivers a fantastic array of one-liners, arching jokes and the ever evolving story line of Commander Bad Ass, his new lover interest and let’s not forget Jared and Mr. Fish.
Looks like the time has come for us part ways. Don’t worry though, Jess will be back…. oh wait. That could be a problem. I’d better make sure that I swing by and keep her in place. I will protect you from the evil that is the Über Nerd. No twelve-sided die for you!
